National vocational qualifications

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are officially recognized professional or vocational competences required:

  • to perform a specific occupation, or

  • to carry out a set of tasks within an occupation at a defined level of complexity.

NVQ certification is intended for adults aged 18 and over, although in exceptional cases it can also be awarded to individuals under 18 if their status as an apprentice or student has ended and they can demonstrate relevant work experience.

The certificate is a nationally valid document that confirms a national vocational qualification or professional/vocational competence for performing a specific occupation or part of an occupation.

A vocational qualification is validated by a three-member professional committee:
  • through direct assessment of the knowledge, skills, and competences specified in the qualification catalog,

  • based on verification of documents and evidence collected in the candidate’s portfolio, or

  • through a combination of both methods.

A portfolio is a collection (binder) of an individual’s competences acquired through learning or work experience. It serves as a tool for the committee when assessing and validating national vocational qualifications.

A candidate holding a national vocational qualification has greater opportunities to find employment or advance in their profession.

It enables individuals to progress in their career path without the need to obtain a higher level of formal vocational education or complete a formal educational program.

Advantages of NPK (National Vocational Qualifications):
  • Quick and straightforward acquisition of officially recognized certificates for practicing a profession.

  • Career development and personal growth, as work experience and non-formal learning are acknowledged and credited.

  • Easier mobility between different sectors, companies, or jobs, since the national vocational qualification is a publicly valid document.

  • Increased competitiveness in the labor market, both in Slovenia and across EU countries.

  • Career advancement at the same education level, allowing individuals to obtain a publicly recognized certificate for performing a specific occupation at a higher level of complexity.

  • Foundation for potential rewards or recognition by employers.

  • Greater social inclusion and motivation for further education.

  • Improved employment opportunities for job seekers and inactive individuals.
